Lions Clubs International Convention

Nearly 17,000 delegates from more than 120 countries will attend the Lions Clubs International (LCI) Convention happening at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) July 4 to 8, making it the largest citywide event held at MTCC this year.

The convention kicks off with a parade along University Avenue Saturday, July 5, with more than 13,000 Lions Clubs members participating.
"Toronto is a world-class city, which reflects our international membership," said Dane LaJoye, LCI division manager, based out of Chicago, Illinois. "The city is a microcosm of our 1.35 million members from countries around the world."
As the primary host of the convention, MTCC will house LCI's lectures, seminars and banquets, while the neighbouring Air Canada Centre will partner as the site for large-audience plenary sessions. Through a competitive bid process, LCI selects a city and venue based on several criteria: ease of international transportation, access to ample hotels and quality restaurants and availability of local attractions. The collaboration between two of Toronto's premier venues in close proximity to each other allows the city to host large-scale events that will generate an estimated $48 million in economic impact.

"Within two city blocks, Toronto can be very competitive in the international convention business with proven financial benefits returned to the city," said Barry Smith, president and CEO, MTCC. "Few other cities offer so many amenities and the capacity to host events of this scope and size within its downtown core. With nearly 17,000 delegates attending sessions at MTCC, our client service staff will be pulling out all the stops to ensure everything runs smoothly and that everyone has a positive conference experience and lasting impression of Toronto."

Olivia Newton-John will deliver the keynote address July 8 before performing with David Foster, a fellow Canadian, whose foundation is the recipient of the LCI's Humanitarian Award and a donation of $250-thousand to support children in need of an organ transplant.

As well, throughout the five-day convention, Lions Clubs will showcase the culture and mission work of their local clubs, uniting the international organization through dance, song and celebration.
